While the Joker is in a firm ground that under certain circumstances even the most noble guy will be immoral. The battle between protagonist and antagonist is purely for their beliefs. The Joker represents the inner devil every person has inside them. The uncontrollable, sadistic, tired figure is the very Joker we see in the film.
